Every February 14th we celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving cards, candy and flowers to the ones we love. We do this in the name of St. Valentine but you may wonder, “Who is this St. Valentine?”
The legend goes that Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third century. Claudius II was the Emperor at the time and he decided that single men made better soldiers than married men. He then outlawed marriage for young men with the goal of building a stronger army. In secret, St. Valentine married young couples anyway. When Emperor Claudius II found out, he had him put to death.p>
Valentine may also have been an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. He sent the first ‘valentine’ to her before he was put to death, ending the letter signed ‘Your Valentine’, words still used on cards today.
The library celebrates Valentines Day with crafts, card making, movies and parties. Or check out a book with a romantic plot to get you in the holiday spirit. Have a very happy Valentine’s Day!
