Before We Were Free

by Julia Alvarez
Categories: historical, realistic
Anita de la Tore is a girl growing up in the turbulent 1960s. Sheltered from most of the political warfare in her Costa Rica homeland, she begins to realize what is really happening. As she becomes almost completely silent, Anita has to decide for herself what values are and if they apply to El Jefe, the dictator.
Anita's untainted views show what life is like for all those oppressed. Very little time is spent covering the history of South American cultures/history, so this book is a "must read." The author, Julia Alvarez, paints such a beautiful picture of life, one becomes swept away in the turmoil that overtakes Costa Rica as its revolutionaries are becoming more and more active and violent.
