Mr. Crepsley takes Darren to Vampire Mountain, to attend council which happens once every twelve years. Darren has to deal with the getting to Vampire Mountain, which involved walking there in the snow bear foot and no flitting. Darren meets friends on the way to Vampire Mountain a vampire and four wolves, who travel with Darren and Mr. Crepsley to Vampire Mountain. Once there Darren meets many more vampires and becomes friends with many. Darren learns the ways of the vampires, though he does no approve of them all. In the end council decides the punishment for Darren and Mr. Crepsley, for Mr. Crepsley blooding a young boy.
