Black Mirror

by Nancy Werlin
Categories: horror, mystery
Black Mirror was written by Nancy Werlin is about Frances Leventhal and how she endangers herself when she looks into brother's, Daniel, suicide. As freshmen, Frances and Daniel received scholarships thanks to Unity, an organization started by recent alum. Daniel and other scholarship students volunteer for Unity, but Frances never wanted too. Frances is astounded to find out when Daniel dies of a heroin overdose. Frances realizes she didn't really know him and in remorse starts working for Unity. Strange conversations happen in the organization among many things, but Frances overhears something suspicious. She doesn't know who to tell. She ends up trusting a grounds worker who is slightly mentally retarded but stable and thoughtful. Although, the confirmation of Frances's suspicions falls a bit flat, the story's twists to keep the reader guessing from beginning to end. Frances feels discouraged about her brother’s death but she keeps herself motivated in honor of her brother’s memory.
Personally I think a book the Black Mirror is an outstanding book to read. It’s the kind of book that, keeps you entertained at the same time once you start reading you never want to put the book down because you want to know what’s happening next! I think this was a great book to start my reading log with and achieved my goal in my reflective essay. I believe it gives me a realization of what goes on in the state schools since we are so isolated in Misawa. Anyways, Werlin has also skillfully has a twisted plot, rich themes, and good characterization.
