Among the Hidden
Category: science fiction
In the story Among The Hidden by Haddix a boy is a third child and parents are not supposed to have third children. If they find out you have a third child they will be shot or you will have to pay millions of dollars. The third child (Luke) doesn’t want to be a third child; he doesn’t want to hide anymore. Luke has never had a chance to see other people besides his family. Later, in his room, he looks through and sees a girl. But he already knows that there are 2 kids in that house next door. So Luke wants to go to their house to find a third child. When he gets there he sees a girl in the room on a computer and the girl sees him. She thinks he’s a stranger and Luke tells her that he’s a third child. The girl’s name is Jen and since the day they meet they have learned more about each other and Luke learns more about the world. Jen said that her parents were rich so they can afford to buy her things. Later Jen wants to have a rally for kids that are third children to be free. She made a chat site only for third children and Jen tells everyone to go to the rally and Luke doesn’t want to go. So once the time came Luke tried to go to Jen’s house to see what happened. He goes there, but I'
I loved the character Jen because they say that she’s really strong and brave. I hate what happens to her in the end! I'd recommend this book for people who like shocking endings!

In the book Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix there is a child named Luke. Luke is a "Shadow child." He is the third child in his family. That is against the law in this time. He meets a girl named Jen. She will change his life forever.
I thought it was a good book because it was always leaving us with a {want to read more} kind of feeling.

This book is about children who have to go into hiding because they are third children and there is a law that if third children are found they will be killed. So those kids are trying to get their rights back like to go to school and go shopping and other things. They’re going to try to accomplish this by doing a rally.
The suspense made it so that I wanted to know what happened next and always want to READ more. The bad parts of the book made me feel sad because the characters seemed so life-like, as if I was looking at them. The setting was never told (like the year) so it always kept me guessing.

Among the Hidden tells about a boy that has to stay hidden from the population police. First, the forest in Luke’s backyard gets torn down so he can’t even play outside anymore. Next, barrens move into the houses that were built where the forest was. Then, one day Luke sees another face in the window on the house across from his. Finally, he decides he wants to find out if the person he saw was another third child.
The theme of freedom is very clear in the story because Luke doesn’t want to be locked up. I would recommend this book to people that like suspenseful books.

Among The Hidden by Haddix is about a young boy Luke in hiding. First, Luke is a third child. The governor thought they would run out of food, so he made a law against having third children. Next, the governor started cutting trees down so new homes would be built for barrens (rich people). Then, Luke one day looks through a window and sees a girl in a house where he knows two teenage boys already live. Finally, Luke gets the courage to meet the girl. Her name is Jen (another third child). Jen is planning a rally against third children having to hide from the governor.
I liked that the theme was really strong. I think the theme was freedom because the rally was fighting for freedom and freedom was what Luke and Jen wanted the most. Jen wanted freedom so much that she is willing to die for it.

The book Among The Hidden by Margaret Haddix tells about a society where the government rules. One big rule is “No Third Children.” Luke, a third child, has to hide in an attic so the Population Police won’t catch him. Luke one day looks outside and sees another shadow child. Bravely Luke goes over to that house where he meets Jen another shadow child. Jen decides to go to a rally for shadow children. What happens next will stun you.
This book talks about freedom, the freedom that the third children want. This book also has a great plot. It starts out slow but later you just can’t stop reading. The setting of the story is explained well. Luke lives in an old house by the woods. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and is in middle school.

Among the hidden by Haddix is about two shadow children trying to get freedom and being able to live a life being a kid without having to hide from people or having his family at risk. Luke and his family live on a farm and where he lives they have a population that if you have kids you can only have two or below . If they catch a third child they will shoot you.
The characters in this book are really strong kids cause they were trying to stand up to the population police so other shadow children didn't have to go through what they did. The theme of this book is about freedom, friendship and law. Yes, I would recommend this book to people who like excitement and adventure.

Among the Hidden by Margaret Haddix takes place sometime in the future. When the government made a law that there will be no third children to be born. Or else they will be fined for $5,000,000 or will be executed. So to avoid doing those things all the third children have to hide. But one boy will stand up and try to get rid of the law so all the third children could be free.
This book tells about how some of the third children want to be free. Especially a third child named Jen who starts a protest against the government so they could be free. I recommend this book to any reader who likes suspense. When my teacher was reading this book all I was thinking was what is going to happen next.

Among the Hidden by Haddix tells about how the government is so controlling people can not have more than 2 children or have any pets. First, the government decided to take down the forest and replace it with houses for barrens. Therefore, Luke is unable to go outside without being seen. As you probably guess Luke is a third kid. Next, Luke was minding his own business when he saw a girl looking out a window of a house that already has two boys. Then, Luke decides to go to the girl’s house. The two of them become great friends and visited often in secret for fear their parents might find out. Finally, after the two have visited enough and Jen has told him a little about the world she tells him about the rally and asks him to go. To make a long story short Jen ends up going by herself and you'd be surprised how it ends.
Theme- The theme is clearly stated, all the third children stand up and fight for freedom and peace. There is adventure in the book and friendship. Setting- The setting is very interesting. In the book the government has too much control. It's a wonder the book doesn’t just pop open because it has too many rules to contain. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventure, friendship, likes a little disappointment, and has a low reading level.

Among the Hidden is about a child named Luke who is a shadow child. First, the population police cut down the woods so it would not be safe for Luke to go outside freely because he is a shadow child. Next, Luke finds a vent to look out without getting caught. Then, one day something changes his life forever - he sees another shadow child. Next, Luke decided to go over to the house without nobody knowing what he was going to do. Then, when he reaches the house he sets off the alarm. But he doesn’t know about it until a girl named Jen tells him but soon they become very good friends. Finally, after they become really good friends Jen tells him about a rally that is going to happen in a few months. Will Luke go or will he chicken out for his life?
What I thought about the book is that it was very interesting to me because it was sort of about adventure and that it had a beautiful friendship involved in it. They talked about the courage some of the characters had in this book. That is what I liked about this book. What I disliked about the book was that it made me sad because the government got to shoot kids and be prejudice to women who wanted to give birth to children.

Among The Hidden tells about a boy named Luke who is a third child and he discovers another third child named Jen. First, Luke is a third child and has to hide all of his life. Next, he discovers that there is another third child (Jen) hiding in their neighbor’s house. Then, he decides to sneak over to her house and meet her in person. Finally, Jen wants Luke to come to a rally that is meant to change the Government’s mind about third children but Luke doesn't go.
The plot of this book is very interesting. The book started off slowly but quickly grew to the climax of the story. The characters of the story were very well described, I could actually imagine what the characters and what they did. The setting was well developed. I knew what was happening around the characters and I knew where they were and the author made it fun reading this book by giving us clues on what year it was taking place instead of telling the reader. The theme was very clear. I could picture everything in my head and I could guess what would happen next.

First, Luke has to stay in the attic and is not allowed to go outside or to look outside because the trees got cut down in his back yard and there are new houses where the trees were. Somebody might see him if he looks out of a window. Next, Out of a small hole in the attic, Luke sees a girl’s face in a house that he knows two boys live already and went to school and the Mom and the Dad already left for work. Then, Luke took a risk to go out of the house to the house where he saw the face to see who it was. He met another third child named Jen. She was a barren so she got more stuff than he did. Last, Luke met Jen’s Dad and they talked about how long Luke knew about Jen. Then Jen’s Dad asked Luke something that would change his life.
Themes- Jen and Luke were both third children and they were also like best friends. Characters- When Luke was running to Jen’s house it seemed like he was really running and like he was a real person. I would recommend this book to Middle Schooler’s that likes sad books.

First, a boy named Luke, who is a 3rd child, shows how he goes through a tough life of everyday hiding in a attic because of a population law that only 4 people (including the parents) are allowed in a family! There live by Luke barrens - rich people. Then, one day while in his usual spot Luke sees another face, where he is sure there is also 2 other children. With no mind at all he rushes over. Stepping onto the mat there's all of a sudden a beeping sound filling the whole area! A girl knocks him over. Later he founds out her name. Next, he learns that she to is a shadow, 3rd child. They soon become close friends! Then one day with no stop Jen the girl talks about a rally. She asks him to come with some of her friends protesting in her parent’s car! Finally, Luke has a question to answer; will he go to the rally with Jen?! Or not.*
I prefer this book for a person who has a spirit of friendship and has knowledge for everything. (understanding)

Among the Hidden tells about kids who have to hide if they are a third child. First, a third child named Luke has to stay hidden inside or could only play outside in the woods, but has to stay hidden. Next, the government cuts down the trees from the woods to build more houses. Luke gets upset because now he can't go outside to play without being seen. Then, Luke sees another third child named Jen. Luke started to sneak out to go with Jen. Lastly, Jen fights to be free so she doesn't have to stay hidden anymore or the other third children don't have to stay hidden anymore either. Jen goes to the rally with all the other third kids. You will be surprised at what happens at the rally!
I really liked the book, Among the Hidden because it always kept me wondering what would happen next. I would recommend this book to people that like mystery books or like to keep wondering what's going to happen next that way you can read more. Also I would recommend this book to people that like to read for fun.

First, Among the Hidden is about a boy who sees a girl in a neighbor’s window. Second, the boy learns about the government. Last, a girl tries to free all shadow children.
The plot of the story is that the book started slowly and then picked up. When one of the main characters dies it is hard to believe. The setting of the book did not tell the year but it was fun to guess what year. The theme of the story was that you could see what would happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery.

This book is about a boy named Luke who is a shadow child. First, the woods near his home were chopped down. Cause of that Luke can’t go outside no more like he use to. It would not be safe for him because he’s a shadow child. Then, one day Luke finds a vent to look through without being caught and he is watching the house all day because he’s always home and he never leaves. Next, he sees another shadow child that lives in the houses that replaced the woods by his house. Then, Luke goes and sneaks over to the house that has another shadow child. Fifth, Luke didn’t know was that there was an alarm system and when he stepped on the property the alarm system went off. Sixth, when Luke enters the house he ripped open the screen door and got cut. Then, he goes up stairs and he finds a girl on a computer and she tackles him and asks what he wants with her. He tells what he’s there for and later on he and this girl Jen become best friends cause they are both shadow children. Next, Jen starts to talk about a rally and she wants Luke to go too since he’s a shadow child also. Will Luke go with his 1st new friend or blow it off?
(SPOILER ALERT -- this review reveals some of the ending of the book) I don’t like it when the government shoots all the kids that are protesting and then they scrub the side walks to cover up the mess. That’s just unbelievable that they would do that and cover it up just so no one would know. One thing that I like about this book is that its exciting and you really never know what’s gonna happen next. This book I recommend for all students and all adults that like suspense stories and mysteries. Read this book I promise it won’t be a waste of time.

This book is about two families who each have a third child. It is hard to believe but it is against the law to have a third child. Luke was a third child who got to go out into the woods and do yard work. He wasn't very happy when he found out that the government recommended building some houses and tearing down the woods where Luke did his yard work. One day, after the houses were put in, Luke looked out of his window and saw another face that he had never noticed (out of his window) before. Soon after that, Luke decided to sneak over to that house that he saw the face in the window. After he knew that everyone was gone, of courses. I can’t tell you any more without getting into detail. All I can say is that it was a very surprising ending. I doubt that you will be able to predict even close to what the ending parts are.
I personally enjoy reading a book that keeps you wondering at all times about what is going to happen next. The theme of this book (I would say) is to stick with your gut and do what you think is right. The setting of this book is on a farm. They never said what the time period was so you would have to read the book to find out. I believe that anyone will love this book but will highly recommend this book to people who like some kind of mystery / adventure stories.

Among the Hidden tells about a world that doesn’t allow 3rd children. But somewhere there a family that has a third child. His name is Luke. Luke spent his whole life in the family attic with no windows. One day Luke looks out a window and saw another face looking at him. Soon the face vanished. Luke sneaks out of the house to find the face that vanished. When he got there it was a girl named "Jen." Luke didn't know that he triggered an alarm and security were on the way. Jen does a big thing for Luke by cutting herself in order to save him. Soon there is a rally so that that the kids like them (3rd children) can be free but something happened ...
The setting in the book for Among the Hidden is most likely in the future because they have things we don't have at this time. The characters are Jen, Luke, Matthew, Mark and his parents. The plot in the book is the rally by Jen. The theme in the story is about freedom, friendship, and law.

The book is about a boy named Luke. He is a third child and there is a law that you can’t have 3 children only 2. One day while Luke is outside playing people start tearing down their woods to build houses. Luke watched the house next to him for days and one day he saw a face in a window. Luke freaks out for a couple of days. Then one day he decides to go in the house and sees a girl on the computer. Ger name is Jen. For a couple of months Luke walks over to the house when no one will see him. One day when Luke went over Jen started to talk about a rally she is holding for all third children at the president’s house so third children can be free. Luke decides not to go. [DON’T READ FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING] The day after the rally Luke finds out that Jen was shot.

The book is about a population controlled society that has a rule that says no family can have more then two kids. If you do have three kids and you are caught, the population police will come and get the child and kill the child. Luke is a boy who is a third child and his family keeps him hidden in the shadows so he is not found. Luke has two older brothers who get to do normal things, like play outside and go places. But Luke has his own little space in the woods in the back of his house in the shadows were no one can see him. He plays there until his mom tells him to come in. One day they decided to cut down the woods. Now that the woods were gone Luke had no way to play outside. His mom kept him in the house more then ever. His only way of freedom and getting to play outside was gone. One day his parents left him home alone so he decided to go play out in the yard, sure that he wouldn't get caught. He discovered another house while he was playing. He had never seen it before because of the woods that were once there. He was curious of what was inside so he decided to take a look. He thought no one was home so he went around the house just looking around. To his surprise he found another third child.
I thought the book was exciting and I liked it a lot. It was suspenseful and made me wonder what would happen next. I really enjoyed reading the book and recommend that others read it to.

This book is about the third child. In the place where Luke lives, there is a law against this. The government thought there would be a food shortage, so every third child born must be killed. A third child name Luke has been hiding all his life and is never taking risks. One day he sees a girl in the yard across from him. He believes it is a third child. What is Luke's next move?

In a desperate society were the Government is the ultimate power and there is little hope for those against it, Luke Garner is an illegal third child. He lives a hidden life in his attic room when the woods -his only outdoor shelter from the eyes of the Population Police- are taken away by the infamous Government and houses built instead. Luke is a farm boy through and through and adores the outdoors. How will he ever survive locked in his room for the rest of his life?
This story was touching and the prejudices and extreme measures taken could easily apply to a society that will descend from our own. Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. Haddix pulls at the heartstrings and hidden fears of her readers in this novel full danger and dreams. Not only am I hooked, but my mom is too!

Luke has never been to school. He's never had a birthday party, or gone to a friend’s house for an overnight. In fact, Luke has never had a friend. Luke is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the Populating Police. He's lived his entire life hiding, and now, with a new housing development replacing the woods next to his family's farm, he is no longer even allowed to go outside. Then, one day Luke sees a girl's face in the window of a house where he knows two other children already live. Finally, he's met a shadow child like himself. Jen is willing to risk everything to come out of the shadows-does Luke dare to become involved in her dangerous plan? Can he afford not to?
