The Black Wing

by Mary Kirchoff
Category: fantasy
The Black Wing is Volume 2 in the Dragonlance Villains Saga. The black dragon Khisanth (introduced in the first Dragonlance series) has awakened from a long sleep cast over all evil dragons by the Dark Queen, Takhisis. Two beautiful nymphids promise to teach her how to shape-change if she will rescue the last female of their race from the humans who have captured her. Khisanth fails to rescue the nymphid, and travels to a distant swamp to build a lair. She meets an ancient evil dragon, a lightning elemental, and one of Takhisis's servants there before she eventually leaves, and joins a section of the Dark Queen's army known as the Black Wing. Here Khisanth gains a dragon friend, Jahet, and is double-crossed by her fellow dragons, who help the enemy Knights of Solamnia to mount an attack on the Black Wing. Khisanth and Jahet counter-attack the Knights, and Jahet is killed. The black dragon has a creeping suspicion about her friend's death, but is unable to do anything about it. When she returns to the base of the Black Wing after the battle, she is shocked by the worst betrayal she will ever face in her long lifetime.
This was my favorite Dragonlance Saga book. All of the characters are well developed and believable. Khisanth's thoughts and emotions are lifelike and easy to understand. Fans of the series and first-time readers of Dragonlance will love The Black Dragon.
