The Catcher in the Rye

by J.D. Salinger
Category: realistic
This book, on the surface, is about a late teen named Holden Caufield and his trip through New York. Holden has gotten expelled (or "the ax") from his boarding school, Pencey Prep. Holden is not ambitious and cold and cynical. Through his trip throughout NY, he makes many discoveries. I'm not going to ruin this book for you, but his discoveries are both physical AND emotional. Read this book and find out.
I thought this was brilliantly well written. It has many deeper meanings and you can't completely describe it...or understand it at first...but they ARE there. This book has tons of symbolism and it's very fun to analyze. Go read this and ask an English teacher for notes.
