Crossing Stones
Falling in love for the first time is just one of the big changes that Muriel Jorgensen suddenly has to deal with. Just as Muriel has started to think of her neighbor, Frank Norman, as more than a friend, he has enlisted to fight in World War I. Her brother, Ollie, lies about his age to go, too, leaving Muriel, along with Frank’s sister, Emma, to keep things going at home. Muriel thinks a lot about what Frank and Ollie are facing, but, at the same time, her thoughts are also occupied elsewhere. The women’s suffrage movement is growing, fascinating Muriel, who longs to be a part of it. When Frank and Ollie’s lives become endangered, though, will Muriel get a different picture of what she really wants from life? Mirroring today’s world events, this story uses verse to wonderfully illustrate how war transforms both the warriors, and the families at home.
