Though he enjoys the good life, courtesy of his wealthy father, Hector Fitzbaudly has always wondered what it was like on the other side of the River Foedus, in the grittier side of Urbs Umida. Unfortunately, Hector soon gets a way-too-up-close-and-personal view, when he becomes penniless and homeless, due to a crook blackmailing Hector’s father over a terrible secret. Hector swears revenge against the man who ruined his family, but he soon learns the perpetrator has an even stranger pastime; he steals jewels from the wealthy to make false eyes, to replace his missing one. The man has many disguises; however, Hector still manages to track him to the mysterious Withypitts Hall, run by the equally mysterious Lady Mandible.
